College Math Requirements
Livingston College:
Livingston College students must demonstrate proficiency at the intermediate
algebra level.
- If you took a mathematics class at your previous
institution, and it is equivalent to either intermediate algebra or
a higher level mathematics course, you have fulfilled the Basic Skills
Math Requirement.
- If you did not take mathematics at your previous
institution or if your class was not accepted by the Rutgers Department
of Mathematics, you must take the Rutgers Math Placement Test. If
you place at precalculus or higher, you will have fulfilled the Basic
Skills Math Requirement. If you place lower than precalculus, you
must take the appropriate level algebra class and complete through
01:640:026 (Intermediate Algebra) or 01:640:027 (Elements of Algebra).
- You may take an equivalent algebra course at your
local community college over the summer.
Douglass College:
Douglass College students must demonstrate proficiency at the intermediate
algebra level.
- If you took a mathematics class at your previous
institution, and it is equivalent to either intermediate algebra or
a higher level mathematics course, you have fulfilled the basic requirement
for mathematics.
- If you did not take mathematics at your previous
institution or if your class was not accepted by the Rutgers Department
of Mathematics, you must take the Rutgers Math Placement Test. If
you place at precalculus or higher, you will have fulfilled the basic
requirement for mathematics. If you place lower than precalculus,
you must take the appropriate level algebra class and complete through
01:640:026 (Intermediate Algebra) or 01:640:027 (Elements of Algebra).
- You may take an equivalent algebra course at your
local community college over the summer.
Rutgers College:
Rutgers College students must successfully complete two courses of
3 or more credits each selected as follows to fulfill the Quantitative
Skills requirement:
- One course in college-level mathematics. This requirement
may be satisfied by a) placing into first-term calculus on the Rutgers
Math Placement Exam; or b) passing one of the following:
- 01:640:103 Topics in Math for Liberal Arts
- 01:640:104 Elementary Combinatorics and Probability
- 01:640:105 Intro. To Linear Mathematics
- 01:640:112 Precalculus II
- 01:640:115 Precalculus College Mathematics
- One additional course selected from:
- A college-level mathematics course selected from
01:640:103,104, or 105, or a course numbered 01:640:135 or above
- Computer Science
- Statistics
- 01:730:201 Introduction to Logic
- A quantitative methods course offered by the
student's major or minor department
Students whose math placement test shows that they need to complete
remedial math courses (01:026:025 or 026) must begin remediation in
their first term at the college; they must register for and complete
remedial courses in consecutive terms, with no hiatus, until they have
passed 01:640:026 Intermediate Algebra.
Courses taken in satisfaction of the Quantitative Skills requirement
may be used to fulfill major or minor requirements.
University College:
University College students must demonstrate proficiency in mathematics
by:
- offering 3 units of secondary school work in college
preparatory mathematics including Algebra II or higher, or
- testing beyond intermediate algebra on the Rutgers
Math Placement Exam, or
- the completion of one year of noncredit preparatory
mathematics (i.e., University College's Algebra for Adult Students
I & II (61:090:021 and 022)).
