Essential Information: Testing and Placement

If you are a transfer student who did not take composition and/or mathematics at your previous college, then you must take a Rutgers transfer placement test in the appropriate subject. Click here for a schedule of placement tests.

If you are a transfer student who took a writing and/or mathematics course at your previous college, then you must refer to the Transfer Credit Evaluation you received from your college. This form will show you whether you need to take a placement test or whether equivalent credits have been accepted for transfer.

Purpose of the Tests
The placement tests are designed to provide information about students' individual skills in writing and in mathematics. The test results are used to place students in courses appropriate to their level of preparation. In some cases, these may be noncredit, developmental courses.

The Writing Placement Test
The writing placement test presents you with several short passages and a question that asks you to respond to ideas in the passages. You have two hours to generate your response. Booklets are provided at the testing site. Click here for answers to frequently asked questions about the writing placement test.

The Math Placement Test
The first part (Level 1) of the math placement test will measure your quantitative and elementary algebra skills. It consists of two sections: Computation and Elementary Algebra. The computation section (30 minutes, 25 questions) measures your ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and to solve problems that involve fundamental arithmetic concepts. The topics include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and applications using arithmetic. The elementary algebra section (30 minutes, 25 questions) measures your ability to perform basic algebraic operations and to solve problems that involve elementary algebraic concepts. The topics include operations with real numbers, polynomials, algebraic fractions and square root expressions; the use of the rules of exponents; factoring; solving equations, inequalities, and systems of equations; graphs of linear equations; and solving word problems.

The second part (Level 2) of the math placement test will measure your skills in intermediate algebra and precalculus, including logarithmic and trigonometric functions. The Level 2 test time allotment is 60 minutes. Click here for answers to frequently asked questions about the math placement test.

Special Arrangements for Students with Disabilities
If you have a learning or physical disability that would prevent you from taking the tests under standard conditions, you may contact Rutgers' Coordinator of Testing, April Pagano, at 732-932-8445 to request special accommodations.

Testing Regulations
You will need Number 2 sharpened pencils to take the test. You will also need to know your social security number.

No books, dictionaries, calculators, or papers of any kind are allowed in the test room. Anyone who gives or receives help during testing, uses notes or books or papers of any kind, or removes test materials or notes from the room will not be permitted to continue the tests. The college will invalidate any test score if there is any reason to question its validity.

Past record of exams are only maintained by the University for 10 years. All previous records are destroyed. Placement test scores are normally not valid for more than 3 years.

Test Scores
Your test scores will be reported to your college. Results of the Rutgers University Placement Test can be obtained by calling the appropriate transfer student academic dean's office or by calling the Office of Testing and Placement at 732-932-8445.
