Essential Information: Transfer Student Timeline

Year One of Community College (Up to 21 Credits):

  • Get advice by meeting with an academic advisor at your college.
Connect with Rutgers: Talk to representatives when they visit your community college.

  • Explore Majors: Your choice of major could affect many transfer decisions, including whether to earn an associates degree, and which Rutgers University undergraduate college you would like to attend.

  • Visit ARTSYS (The Rutgers and New Jersey Community College Articulation System), to find the Recommended Transfer Program. This web site will assist you with course selection at your New Jersey Community College. Take some time to work through all the information available at this site.

Year Two of Community College (21-53 Credits):

Planning for your first semester at Rutgers University:

  • Go to the transfer student orientation at your college.

  • Discuss your course selection with an advisor.

  • Take a practice run on the buses before the first day of classes. Bring a map and find the buildings and classrooms. The buses will be more crowded after classes start, but at least you'll know where you are going.

  • If you can, avoid taking more than five courses your first semester (i.e., 15 credits). Adjusting to a new academic and social setting often takes time and energy
